More than 60 people gathered at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ in Seatack, Virginia to voice their opposition to a proposed lithium-ion battery energy storage facility. The community, founded in 1810, is recognized as the oldest African American community in the United States.

The American Power Ventures (APV) facility is planned for industrial zoned land on Beautiful Street, which is located near residential areas and a historic cemetery. Concerns were raised about the disturbance to unmarked graves in the cemetery if the project is approved.

The city clarified that no final decisions have been made, stating that the project’s application is not on the current Planning Commission agenda. The matter is tentatively scheduled for discussion during the September Planning Commission meeting.

Seatack residents intend to attend the meeting and express their concerns regarding property values, the environment, and the risk of fire. APV, in response, assured the Seatack Civic League that the facility would not produce pollutants or emissions. The company also emphasized that the location of the facility, set back from homes in a wooded area on privately-owned industrial zoned land, would minimize visibility.

Residents argue that the historical significance of Seatack, being the oldest African American community in the country, must be recognized. They express concern that those outside the community may not fully comprehend the significance and only see the potential financial gain.

APV’s Chief Financial Officer, Marc Poulson, issued a statement assuring that the company is actively engaging with city staff and residents to address their concerns. Poulson emphasized that the facility would utilize the latest technology and safety measures.

Residents remain determined to collaborate with APV to find a resolution to their concerns.
